ISMART! Learn About UDL Applied in Assessments

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Are you interested in UDL and assessment? Come learn about how UDL is being used to create
innovative assessments to improve both assessment and instruction. What is ISMART other
than a clever name? ISMART is a project based on Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) which is an
alternate assessment in use in 19 states for students with the most significant cognitive
disabilities. DLM is a unique assessment based an extensive learning map that includes
multiple pathways of skills required for success in English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics,
and science in grades 3 through high school. ISMART extends DLM by: (1) developing and
prototyping innovative items and testlets that measure students’ knowledge and skills in science
using Evidence Center Design (ECD) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL); and (2)
developing an innovative digital teacher dashboard that provides feedback on individual student
performance on the testlets, including recommendations for instruction and just-in- time
assessment literacy supports to facilitate appropriate interpretations and uses of results.

In this session, you will see our approach to using UDL generally, as well as introducing student
choice. You will have an opportunity see the items and consider how to apply them in your own
context. In addition, we will present the teacher dashboard, built using UDL principles to help
teachers see student progress and mastery and to support instructional decisions. You will
contribute to next iterations of ISMART as well as new applications for the approach. You will
learn that assessment can be fun!!!
