In the past year, International Baccalaureate diploma program teachers in the Portland, Oregon area were surveyed and interviewed about their use of UDL-aligned practices. The governing organization for IB has, for nearly 10 years, endorsed and encouraged the use of UDL and UDL-aligned practices, and this work sought to understand whether that effort stimulated any response from a sampling of teachers at three comprehensive public high schools with IB programs. The study theorized that the IB program, because of how its attributes align with many best practices of implementation science, might be an optimal conduit for fostering UDL-aligned practices in high schools, where UDL has often struggled to take root. The study discovered that while teachers were generally unaware the official UDL framework, much of their work in their programs aligned clearly with the principles, guidelines and checkpoints of UDL.
