How do I engage my students in learning? Aleksandra Hollingshead
Have you struggled with designing engaging instruction for students with severe cognitive disabilities? Have you wondered how cultural and linguistic differences impact student’ engagement at schools? In this presentation we will connect research findings with practical solutions for creating engaging learning experiences for diverse population of students.

Expressing Scientific Comprehension Through Creative Expression Nicole Osier
A crux of universal design for learning (UDL) is flexibility in approaches for students to demonstrate what they know. However, barriers remain especially in pre-licensure majors (e.g. nursing). The purpose of this presentation is to highlight how Dr. Osier developed and implemented a creative assignment consistent with UDL principles; a diverse array of creative submissions to date will be shared during the TED-style talk, including: songs, comedy, poetry, videos, jewelry, quilts, clothes, paintings, and a yoga flow. These assignments are individually graded, and if a talent release form is signed, students are eligible for inclusion in the bet-of-the-semester talent show. Not only do students express valuing this flexibility in assignment topic and submission format, they report enjoying learning from and about their peers. The assignment has led to a TED-style talk at Dr. Osier’s university and has been expanded to a stand-alone freshman signature course for Fall 2019.

Defy Expectations Allison Posey
In this talk, we will explore some incredible stories that demonstrate the power of the brain and share implications for practice. Slide deck.
