The presentation will include the historical evolution of equity in public education in the United States from the late 18th Century to the present. The marriage of the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) instructional framework and the principles, guidelines and checkpoints of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) supports instructional equity. The integration of the GRR and UDL is referred to as GRRUDL (rhymes with "noodle"), and it is supported by research. The theoretical and research underpinnings of this marriage and the relationship to 21st Century learning will be shared. An alignment of the four components of the GRR and UDL and a GRRUDL lesson plan template will be shared. Participants will experience a lesson using the GRRUDL instructional framework. A Q&A will conclude the session.
